The Hafursa Cooperative was established in 1975 and has more than 950 members. Each of these producers has a plot averaging less than 1.5 hectares. These plots are generally well-shaded and intercropped with banana and other nitrogen-fixing crops. The Hafursa Cooperative joined the Yirgacheffe Coffee Farmers’ Cooperative Union (YCFCU) in 2002. The YCFCU was established to support sustainable coffee production in the Gedeo region of Ethiopia and is made up of more than 25 cooperatives with a total of more than 45,000 members.
